JCCHS 9th Grade Summer Reading Assignment

Welcome to John Carroll Catholic High School!

Our incoming 9th grade students should find and read at least one book which meets the following requirements:

  • The student is interested in the book and chooses it to read.

  • The student has never read it (or part of it) before this summer.

  • Parents approve of the book.

  • Its Lexile score is between 700 and 1300.

  • The student should read the whole book.

  • While reading, students should use a reading strategy learned in middle school which best helps them remember the book’s content and analyze its artistry. Reading strategies include things like annotations, chapter summaries, character analyses, plot diagrams, etc.

  • Students should come the first day of school with the book and evidence of their reading strategy, ready to talk and write about it.

For example, the following books were required reading on previous years’ summer reading lists, and they meet the Lexile requirement:

Fahrenheit 451 (Bradbury), The Witch of Blackbird Pond (Speare), The Horse and His Boy (Lewis), Messenger (Lowry), Son (Lowry), and Lord of the Flies (Golding).

If you have questions regarding this assignment, please email me at

I pray you all enjoy your summer reading, and I look forward to meeting you all very soon.

In certain subjects, students may have already completed a year of what is usually an entry-level course in high school.  To accommodate these students, waiver tests are offered in these subjects to determine if the student has mastered the minimal competencies needed. Any student who has completed a full year of Spanish or French I or II should consider taking the John Carroll waiver test.  Students who choose not to take the waiver test, and/or students who do not successfully complete the waiver test will be placed into the entry-level course.

The Spanish and French waiver test will be given at John Carroll at 9:00am and at 10:15am on May 21 in room 103.

The review guide for Spanish and French can be found here.

Please contact Julie Meadows at or Lane Geurtsen at if you have any questions.
