To “experiment” with different forms of creative writing, such as poetry,

                        plays
To develop and utilize criteria for evaluating creative writing effectively
To assist in the word processing and editing of works for the literary magazine
and to assist in the production of the yearly issue of The Looking Glass
Methods of evaluation:
            Daily participation
Quizzes on information discussed and read in class
Completion of homework and in-class assignments
            Completion of individual writing projects
Presentations of writing projects and well-known authors and their respective
                        styles
Completion of journal entries assigned periodically throughout the semester
Completion of assignments for the literary magazine(as needed)
Semester project which counts as part of the quarter grade and 1/3 of your
                        semester grade
An important aspect of your grade will be your timely completion of projects
assigned.  When projects are NOT completed according to the deadlines given in class, the grade on that project will be seriously affected.
The specific policy regarding the completion of assignments is as follows:
                        1. A daily assignment, such as class work or homework, will ONLY
be accepted for a grade AT THE TIME IT IS DUE. These are
assignments which are usually 5 to 20 points.
                        2. Major projects are due on the date assigned. If you have difficulty
finishing by that time, you should see me individually about why
you are unable to complete the project by that date.  An extension
of ONE DAY may be given, according to the circumstances
involved, and there will be NO PENALTY regarding the grade for
that project.  Major projects will be accepted ONE DAY LATE, but
the grading will done beginning with ONE HALF of the total points
for that assignment.  Major projects are usually worth 30 to 100+
                            points.
                        3. When you have been absent, you will be given extension on a
specific assignment, including daily assignments, based on the
number of days absent according to the policy concerning late
                             work in the JCCHS Handbook.
Grades:
Your grade is based on completion of a certain number of writing projects and/or
assignments for each quarter.  Each project is assigned a total point value.  If you complete your projects on time and in the manner assigned, you will receive all the
points. Also, daily assignments, quizzes on class notes or reading assigned in class, and group projects which will be assigned a certain number of points.  Therefore, there is the potential for everyone in the class receiving A’s and B’s if you simply keep up and complete the work assigned.  You will have to write, a task I am assuming you enjoy!
Class rules:
Please follow the rules outlined for you and distributed the first day of class.
Additional guidelines:
Make the most of the actual class time given to you for writing assignments.  Otherwise, these writing assignments will become your homework!
Please write all journals, freewriting, and daily assignments in black or blue pen.
Also, according to English Department policy there should be an MLA heading on every
assignment turned in for a grade.
A cover sheet which outlines the requirements of a particular assignment must be completed and attached to each writing project before you turn that project in for a grade.
Since so much of the work in the computer lab is independent and because each
person’s pace of writing is different, it is very important that each of you listen carefully
to directions and stay on task.  Always bring other work with you so that when you finish
“publishing” your writing project, you will have something else to do.  Please do not
distract others who are trying to complete their assignment during class time!!!
You are responsible for putting up your disk at the end of class when we are in
the computer lab. Points will be deducted from your grade if you repeatedly fail to put up your disk. You are also responsible for returning your class disk when you take it home to complete a project.
Be willing to set high goals for yourself and your writing.  Strive to “stretch” your creative talents and take pride in the creative “masterpieces” you are capable of
producing.  I always enjoy reading what you have written and especially enjoy sharing
with you your ideas about writers and different kinds of writing styles.
I am looking forward to working with each one of you!        Mrs. Hayes
