Most colleges are now requiring the writing portion of the ACT. It is best to take it once. There is probably not a need to continue to take that portion. You will need to go on line to apply and be sure to check if they have a separate scholarship application.

TIER 1 COLLEGIATE SCHOLARSHIPS
Most colleges and universities have a Tier 1 scholarship program. If you are going to submit an application to a school and believe that you would qualify and would like to be nominated or considered for nomination for one of their Tier I scholarships, please submit your request in writing to Mrs. Kok or Mrs. Covington. Deadline for application for MOST Tier I scholarships is November 1; however, some are earlier. For more information regarding any of these scholarship programs, please go to the web sites of the individual schools. THURGOOD MARSHALL COLLEGE FUND (TMCF) The TMCF awards approximately 300 scholarships annually to students attending the 47 TMCF-member schools. The fund also provides TMCF scholars with a variety of internships and other opportunities. There is a range of scholarship options—some supporting different schools or specific areas of interest. The TMCF scholarships are not awarded directly to students. The scholarship award is forwarded to the member school to be applied to the student’s account. Criteria includes: 1) attendance at one of the 47 TMCF-member schools, 2) minimum 3.0 GPA for the duration of the scholarship, 3) US citizen or legal permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card of passport stamped I-551, 4) complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (cannot be completed until 2011 income tax returns are completed), 5) demonstrate leadership qualities and service experience, 6) submit a résumé demonstrating community service and any employment/internship experience, 7) one letter of recommendation, 8) copy of the Student Aid Report received from FAFSA filing, 9) transcript, and 10) submit an essay (500 word minimum). Kids Chance Scholarship
$500 to $1500 and are renewable. The Alabama Law Foundation offers scholasrhips for college and technical students who have had a parent killed or permanently and totally disabled in an on-the-job-accident. The Alabama Law Foundation administers the fund. Applications are on-line at

GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARS One thousand students will receive this renewable, need-based, merit scholarship to be given throughout the scholar’s undergraduate career. For those who choose to study in one of seven graduate disciplines: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health, or science, the scholarship can continue through the pursuit of a doctoral degree. Students are also provided mentorship, peer connections, etc., to enhance development of their leadership skills and to assure them every opportunity to attain their degree. Criteria includes: African American, native American/Alaska native, Asian American, or Hispanic American; US citizenship, national, or legal permanent resident of the US; minimum 3.3 unweighted GPA or GED recipient; first-time college enrollee in Fall 2012 as a full-time degree seeking student; leadership capabilities and participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities; and meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria. ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION “MOST VALUABLE STUDENT” SCHOLARSHIP 500 four-year awards available at the local, state, and national level to graduating seniors who will be judged based on leadership, financial need, service, and scholarship. ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ELKS FAMILIES 250 $4,000 awards to the children and grandchildren of dues-paying Elks members. Applicants must be graduating seniors, who are going on to college, and who exhibit knowledge, charity, community, and integrity. LINLY HEFLIN SCHOLARSHIP $3,000 per year, renewable, to a limited number of Alabama women who have both significant economic need and a sound academic record. Scholarships are restricted to 4-year Alabama, SACS accredited, postsecondary schools. Minimum ACT is 23. Must be Alabama resident and US citizen and must be able to prove financial need and academic proficiency. Applications are available online at www.linlyheflin.org . DISTINGUISHED YOUNG WOMEN OF JEFFERSON COUNTY (formerly Junior Miss) Current high school junior girls who are residents of Jefferson County are eligible to participate in this competition which will be held in July 2012. Contestants will compete in Interview, Talent, Scholastics (no minimum GPA), Self Expression, and Fitness. First mandatory meeting is Sunday, March 11.
WENDY’S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN Graduating seniors athletes are eligible to apply online at www.wendysheisman.com Click on “Apply Now.” Questions regarding the program may be addressed to wendys@act.org or call 800-205-6367. Applicants must have a minimum B average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport. Application instructions are available in the College & Career Room B112. COCA-COLA SCHOLARS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS 250 awards @ $5,000 per year for four years for truly motivated, dedicated, involved high school seniors. Who is eligible to apply? Current high school (or home-schooled) seniors attending school in the United States (or select DoD schools); U.S. Citizens; U.S. Nationals; U.S. Permanent Residents; Temporary Residents (in a legalization program); Refugees; Asylees; Cuban-Haitian Entrants; or Humanitarian Parolees; anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application; planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution; carrying a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of their junior year of high school. LOIS PICKARD MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION Award amounts vary. This competition is open to serious and gifted young musicians ages 12-senior high schools. Students of strings, brass, winds, percussion and piano are eligible to enter in one category only. Entrants must be legal US residents and reside in AL, GA, FL, MS, & TN. Competition date is Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Birmingham-Southern College Concert Hall. There is a $35 entry fee. HORATIO ALGER SCHOLARSHIP Awards range in value from $2,500 to $20,000. Criteria: Graduating senior who will enter college by Fall 2012; commitment to pursuing and completing a bachelor’s degree at a public or private US institution; critical financial need; involvement in co-curricular and/or community activities; minimum 2.0 GPA; and US citizen. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., UNITY BREAKFAST ESSAY CONTEST Awards range from $1,500 for first place award to $750 for third place award. Contest is open to all students in grades 10-12 in all high schools of Metropolitan Birmingham. A winning essay will be chosen from among HHS students and submitted to the city-wide contest. The essay should be between 500-750 words on the following subject: Birmingham’s Unity: Building on the Stone of Hope.” Complete guidelines are available in the Guidance Scholarship file in Guidance. NFIB YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR FOUNDATION (YEF) AWARD Minimum of 100 scholarships including non-renewable and renewable awards nationwide ranging in value from $1,000 to $10,000. Applications are open to graduating seniors who will enter a postsecondary school by Fall 2012. An officially established business is a requirement. Other participation is considered such as DECA, Junior Achievement, FBLA, FFA, NFTE, et al. Work experience is also a consideration as well as a sound academic record and test scores. Hesburgh-Yusko Scholar - Notre Dame A merit based scholarship and leadership development program designed to equip students to have an impact on the world. Lifelong learners and collaboratie leaders. Offers 4 years of merit awards at $25,000 per year. Four fully funded Summer Enrichment experiences. Students must apply to Notre Dame, and be nominated to this program. Selection criteria 1. Demonstrated leadership ability solving meaningful problems 2. Distingusihed Academic Accomplishment, not driven by test scores, but by a true passion for learning 3. Sincere commitment to service, more than is required 4. Students interested in the program should apply Early Action to the University of Notre Dame by November 1 and the application to this program is due November 15.

Business Scholarship UAB deadlines coming up – December 1st – Opportunities in Business/ $5000/year for up to 4 years. Incoming freshmen who plan to major in business [including Undeclared Business] are eligible to apply for these awards. We hope to see more applicants from John Carroll for these scholarships. FYI – Preference is given to students who would bring some level of diversity to the school, those who are first generation college students, and to those who demonstrate a financial need. Generally, prospective incoming freshmen should have at least a 3.25 GPA and a 24 ACT score. We encourage all to apply!

Chemical Engineering scholarship to freshmen who have exelled academically. The scholarhips are renewable. It is a stackable scholarship. Student MUST specify Pre-Cehmical Engineering as their major on their application. The form, in Guidance, must be returend with a resume, no later than January 15th, 2012.

Minority Seniors
This is a very important announcement for minority seniors. There is a seven-week summer bridge program free to freshmen enrolling in a science, technology, engineering or math program at UAB this summer. For information on participation and an application please come to Guidance. You need a 3.0 gpa minimum and a 20 ACT minimum to apply. That is a summer bridge program at UAB free to entering freshmen.
The other summer bridge program sites are Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Auburn, Miles, Oakwood, Stillman, Tuskegee, The University of Alabama, UAH and University of South Alabama.

Jim Harrell Poetry Scholarship - Montevallo. If you are interested in attending Montevallo next year there is a poetry competition with a 2/1 deadline. Not much time. That is February 1st. However the 1st place is $2000 and second place is $1000. Pick up details in Guidance listed under Jim Harrell Poetry Scholarship.

Seniors there is a new scholarship in Guidance. This NAAS-USA scholarship has the requirement of being a US citizen ,and a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average. You must follow the instructions on the form found in Guidance. Again this is a new scholarship for seniors with a minimum of a 2.0 gpa.
Delta Sigma Theta Scholarship in Guidance. Open to students with a 3.0 or higher and ACt of 20 or higher. The scholarship is based on community involvement, leadership skills and communication skills. You must see Mrs. Kok and apply. The selection committee will choose two Deadline is March 1, 2012
