SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENTS
 
 

AABE Scholarship awarded to underrepresented minorities that plan on applying in science, business, engineering, environmental studies, and mathematics. You must have a minimal ‘B’ average and have a resume’ of participation in extracurricular activities and awarded honors. Application in Guidance. There is an essay and 2 letters of recommendation. Deadline to turn in is February 1.

 
UAB School of Business Scholarship applications can be picked up in Guidance or at www.uab.edu/business.  Students must be admitted to UAB by December 1st to qualify.

Mensa Scholarship Essay Contest – Eligibility applies to persons residing in the Birmingham area. Winners chosen on basis of essays only – not grades or honors. Awards from $300 to $1000. Deadline 12/31/08. Visit

DAR national organization gives thousands of dollars a year in scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are studying American history or American government, nursing, piano, or voice.  In addition a scholarship is awarded to a student who enters a particular program at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas.  There is also a scholarship for students who are the son or daughter of a DAR member.  There is more information about these scholarships at www.dar.org.  Follow the link for Scholarships.  The scholarships that are for high school seniors are:

Most of these scholarships have an application deadline of February 15.  A few have an April 15 application deadline. Applications for all of these scholarships require the endorsement or sponsorship of a DAR chapter.

  
J. CRAIG & PAGE T. SMITH SCHOLARSHIP                                                                                                                             

 Up to $15,000 per year, renewable, for tuition, on campus room, books, and meal plan for graduating seniors who reside in Alabama and have been accepted to an accredited 4-year higher education facility within the state.  Special consideration is given to applicants who would be the first in their family (excluding siblings) to attend college.  Students who have overcome personal and financial hardships are encouraged to apply.   Completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required.  The awards were designed to identify and assist those students who have given back to their community through volunteer work or service to family.  Applications may be found at www.jcraigsmithfoundation.org and may be completed and submitted online.  The applications may also be downloaded and a hard copy may be submitted.  The minimum GPA for qualification is C and there is no minimum ACT/SAT score, but applicants must have attempted one of those tests.   There are additional responsibilities in addition to college attendance and maintenance of acceptable GPA.  Deadline to J.   Boston University full tuition scholarships:
Trustee Scholarship - Boston University's most prestigious scholarship recognizes outstanding academic performance and leadership ability.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship - acknowledges students who have embraced the ideals of Dr. King through academic accomplishment, leadership abilities, and a strong commitment to social justice and community involvement.
Alexander Graham Bell Scholarship - recognizes students with strong math and science abilities who have the potential to thrive at BU's College of Engineering.All applications, essays, and required forms are due by December 1, 2008 to Boston University, more information is available at www.bu.edu.

Linly Heflin Scholarship-Applicants must be: females planning to attend a four-year college in Alabama, have financial need, ACT score of 22 or higher, and academic proficiency. Applications are available in the guidance office or at www.linlyheflin.org. Deadline is 1/18/08. 

American Cancer Society-Applicants must have had a diagnosis of cancer before the age of 21 and must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Applications will be mailed upon request. Call 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit www.cancer.org. Applications must be received no later than 2/1.

University of Alabama Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship-Scholarships will be awarded to twelve incoming freshmen students who are the first in their immediate family to attend a four-year college. Applicants must have a 3.0 or higher GPA and must have been admitted to UA for Fall 2008. Priority consideration will be given to students with financial need who file the FAFSA by 3/1/08. Applications are available at www.scholarships.ua.edu. Deadline is 2/4.

Toyota Community Scholars-Applicants should have an outstanding academic record, leadership, and a well-documented record of service both in and out of school. While academic performance is a prime factor in the selection process, the distinguishing characteristic will be the student’s overall contribution in the area of service. JCCHS may nominate one student. Applications are available in the guidance office. Students who wish to be considered must return applications to Mrs. Kok no later than the close of school on Friday, 12/05

Teacher Education-This scholarship is available to Alabama residents who plan to enroll in an Alabama college with an approved teacher education program. The scholarship will provide up to $5,000 per year for up to four years for students willing to teach in critical need areas: mathematics, special education, general science, and English language arts. Applications will be available online at www.myaea.org beginning 12/1.

 Colonel’s Scholars. The  KFC Scholars Program assists students with financial need who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a public institution within their state. You must have maintained a GPA of 2.75 or higher, enrolling in a public, in-state college or university and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Florida A & M University is providing an outstanding opportunity for Black women entering college in the fall of 2009. It is designed to address their absence in the field of computer technology. Dr. Jason Black is the Principal Investigator of a recently awarded $552,000 NSF Grant entitled African-American Women in Computer Science. The grant provides scholarships from $4000 to $10,000 per year for female African American students. They need help to get the word out about this great opportunity to build back up the enrollment of women in the CIS Department. University of Chicago has a $400 million need-based initiative directed at students from lower and middle income families. This eliminates all student loans for students who demonstrate family need and whose annual family income is between $60,000 and $75,000.

Merit-based scholarship program.  Covers four years of undergraduate study and range from 2/3 tuition to full tuition, room, board, fees.  You must be considering Emory, have outstanding records of academic achievement, possess extra-ordianry personal qualities, and have made significant contributions to your school, and community.  To be nominated you must let Mrs. Kok know of your interest and your application must be in to Emory by November 1.

SCHERING-PLOUGH WILL TO WIN SCHOLARSHIP
Over $50,000 in scholarship awards will be made nationwide to high school seniors who suffer from asthma and who are pursing higher education and who have achieved a level of excellence as mentioned below.  Two $5,000 scholarships will be awarded in the following categories:
     a)  performing arts (dance, music, theater),
     b)  visual arts (painting drawing, sculpture, photography, film),
     c)  community service, 
     d)  athletics, and
     e)  science.

HORATIO ALGER SCHOLARSHIP
Seeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a college education and a desire to contribute to society.  Applicants must be enrolled as a full time high school senior, must be intent upon pursuing a bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution, must be able to demonstrate critical financial need (maximum $50K/year family income), must be involved in co-curricular and community service activities, must have a minimum GPA of 2.0, and must have US citizenship.  Applications must be submitted online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships .   Deadline for submitting application to Horatio Alger Scholarship Program:October 30, 2008

Linly Heflin Scholarship:
The Linly Heflin Scholarship Committee grants four year scholarships in the amount of $2500 per year to a liminted number of Alabama women who have both significant economic need and a sound acdemic record.  Scholarships are to be used for four year Alabama, SACS accredited, colleges.  You must have at least a 22 ACT score, be a resident of Alabama and a US citizen, demonstrate financial need and academic proficiency.  The completed application form and supporting documents must be mailed to the appropriate office and postmarked by January 15, 2009.  Applications will be available in the the college advising office.
 
Thomas E. Huey Scholarship:
Awarded by the BLSA chapter of the NALS, Inc.  The Scholarship is for $1,000 and is awarded to a senior.  Scholarship applications are accepted upon 50% financial need, 40% grade point average (must be at least a "B"), and 10% achievements and accomplishments.  The application deadline is January 1, 2009.  (This is a received by deadline).  Applications are available in the College Counseling Office.

Lawson State Community College Scholarship Committee  Minimum GPA 2.75  Awards are given for the cost of tuition.   Recipients must take at least 12 hours and maintain a 3.0.   Deadline : Before the scholarship committee meets which is two weeks before the end of the each semester.

Coca-Cola Scholars  50 awards are $5000- per year for four years; 200 awards are $2500- per year for four years.  Students should have at least a 3.0 GPA, demonstrate leadership, a commitment to community, and academic achievement, as well as work part-time.  Applications are only accepted on-line.  Contact: www.coca-colascholars.org

University of Alabama, Huntsville  UAH Platinum, UAH Gold, UAH Foundation, UAH Presidential and Academic Excellence, Academic Competitiveness Grant, and Valedictorian Scholarship  Awards range from $750- to full tuition  Minimum ACT score of 23  Minimum GPA of 2.75  Deadline February 1. 2008  Contact: www.uah.edu

University of North Alabama   200 Endowed Scholarships awarded each year. Requirements and award amounts vary. Freshmen are automatically considered for several but not all scholarships based on application to UNA.

“Coca Cola Dream Scholarship” is for students whose parents did not complete a baccalaureate degree, or if the student resides in a single parent home, that parent did not complete a baccalaureate degree.  Scholarships can be general or major-specific. Jefferson State Community College  Fifteen Full tuition scholarships awarded. Minimum of 3.0 GPA and 20 ACT.  Other scholarships for Speech Team, Newspaper Staff, Radio Staff, Jeff State Singers and College Theatre. Students should send in the application and the admissions office at Jeff State will direct their questions about these other scholarships. Application due March 1, 2009.Applications are in the Counseling Center.

Shelton State Community College Awards given for tuition for students taking 15 hours each semester. Minimum ACT of 20 or SAT of 526. Minimum GPA (solely academic courses) of 3.0  Deadline: March 1, 2009. Contact: Debbie Barton, (205) 391-2901 or dbarton@sheltonstate.edu

Tuskegee Alumni Association Award of $4000- over 4 years.
